Members click the map marker in the activity composer, type a location, pick it from Google’s autocomplete suggestions, and the activity posts with a map of that spot. Every place a member saves also lands on a “Check-ins” tab on their profile, with a map of everywhere they have been. Check-ins works with both BuddyPress and BuddyBoss Platform, in member activity and inside groups. **This plugin needs a Google Maps API key with billing enabled on the Google Cloud project.** Google requires this for the Places and Geocoding APIs the plugin calls. Without a key, the check-in marker does not appear and nothing is stored. Google’s free monthly usage tier covers small and mid-sized communities, but the billing account has to exist before any request succeeds. Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard 2. Navigate to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin 3. Choose the bp-check-in ZIP file and click “Install Now” 4. After installation, click “Activate” 5. Create a Google Maps API key (see “Set up the Google Maps API key” below) – the plugin does nothing until you do 6. Go to WB Plugins > Check-ins > General, paste the key, and click “Verify” 7. Save the settings, then post an activity update and click the map marker to test #### Manual Installation 1. Upload the entire `bp-check-in` folder to the `/wp-content/plugins/` directory 2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress 3. Follow steps 5 to 7 above to add and verify the Google Maps API key #### Set up the Google Maps API key The plugin calls Google’s Places and Geocoding APIs, and Google will not answer either one without a key on a billed project. This is a Google requirement, not a plugin limitation. 1. Create a project in the [Google Cloud Console](https://console.cloud.google.com/) 2. Enable billing on that project. Google rejects the requests this plugin makes with a PROJECT_BILLING_DISABLED error until you do, even inside the free usage tier 3. Enable the Maps JavaScript API, Places API, and Geocoding API for the project 4. Create an API key under Credentials, and restrict it to your site’s domain 5. Paste the key at WB Plugins > Check-ins > General and click “Verify” The Verify button tests the key against every Google endpoint the plugin uses and tells you exactly which one failed, including whether billing is the problem. Without it, the check-in marker does not appear and no location is saved * Members must allow their browser’s location permission to use the check-in panel ## FAQ ### Does this plugin work with both BuddyPress and BuddyBoss? Yes, this plugin works seamlessly with both BuddyPress and BuddyBoss platforms. ### Does this plugin require BuddyPress or BuddyBoss to be installed? Yes. BuddyPress or BuddyBoss Platform must be installed and activated, with the Activity component enabled. The plugin checks for this itself and explains the problem in the admin if either is missing. ### Do I really need a Google Maps API key? Yes. It is not optional. The plugin is inert without one: the map marker never appears in the activity composer, the check-in panel never renders, the Google Maps script is never loaded, and no location can be saved. Add and verify a key at WB Plugins > Check-ins > General before rolling the feature out to members. ### Does the API key need billing enabled? Yes. Google requires an active billing account on the Cloud project before the Places and Geocoding APIs will answer, even for usage inside the free monthly tier. A key without billing returns PROJECT_BILLING_DISABLED and the plugin cannot save a place. The Verify button reports this specific error so you know that billing, not the key itself, is what needs fixing. ### Does this plugin require location services? Yes. The check-in map and the autocomplete search box only load once the browser reports the member’s position. If a member blocks the location permission, or the browser has no geolocation support, the check-in panel has no autocomplete and cannot be used. Members see a clear message rather than a broken panel. ### How can we add a place when posting? Go to your profile’s post update section and click the map marker icon. The icon appears only once a Google Maps API key is saved in the settings. Type in the autocomplete box, select a location, and a map will display it. ### Where can I see all check-ins? Two places. The activity dropdown menu has a filter that shows check-ins only, on both BuddyPress and BuddyBoss. Each member also gets a “Check-ins” tab on their profile listing every place they have saved, with a map of all of them. ### Can members set a location on their profile? Yes. With the “Profile location field” setting enabled, the plugin creates a “Location” xProfile field and binds Google autocomplete to it, so members pick a real place instead of typing free text. The saved place renders on the profile as a Google Maps link. ### Can members check in inside groups? Yes. Members can attach a place to activity they post in a group, and it reads as“ checked-in in the group X” in the stream. ### Can I rename or hide the Check-ins tab? Yes. At WB Plugins > Check-ins > General you can turn the profile Check-ins tab off entirely, or rename its label. ### Can members delete their check-ins? Yes. The Check-ins tab lists each saved place with view and trash actions per row, plus select-all and bulk delete for clearing several at once. ### Will this work with my theme? The plugin follows BuddyPress template standards and has been tested with popular BuddyPress and BuddyBoss themes including BuddyX and Reign, as well as Youzer and Youzify member profiles. ### Is the plugin translation ready? The reason I decided taking my chances after all was seeing that this has been updated only 9 months ago, with the most recent reviews from couple years ago. Setting the product up was as fluent as it could be. I only had to pick up my Google API, which is being used with other plugins too, and as I came to the activity page this was all ready. It found my location exact, the moment I landed the post section, and the only thing I then had to do was to write the beginning of the name or address of the location I wanted to share. That easily even the map was settled for the post I now published! Perfect, just perfect! ^^ Thank You!
